Exceptional Standards of Care

Raritan Bay medical Center is accredited by the Joint commission (TJC), licensed by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, and approved by Medicare, Medicaid and most major medical insurance providers.  With locations in Perth Amboy and Old Bridge, Raritan Bay Medical Center is a member of the Robert Wood Johnson Health Network, a major clinical affiliate of UMDNJ Robert Wood Jonson Medical School, and an affiliate of the Cancer Institute of New Jersey.

Outpatient Services

A wide range of outpatient mental health programs are offered through Raritan Bay Medical Center’s Perth Amboy location and at the hospital’s Bay Family Medicine practice in Old Bridge. This expanding service provides comprehensive assessment, counseling and medication management for individuals with any type of psychiatric disorder, including those associated with older adults. Additionally, both sites host support groups for those caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Inpatient Care

In some cases, mental illness may require hospitalization. Raritan Bay Medical Center’s Perth Amboy location maintains a dedicated, 26-bed inpatient unit for adults with acute psychiatric needs. Based on a biopsychosocial model of care, our clinical team provides thorough evaluation, diagnosis and individualized treatment for all major behavioral health conditions, including geriatric patients with dementia and those suffering from severe depression, anxiety and other disorders. Individual, group and recreational therapies are utilized to help patients achieve their highest level of functioning and resume their roles in the community.  Additionally, board certified/board eligible general and geriatric psychiatrists are available around-the-clock to assist patients in the hospital’s medical/surgical units who may have underlying or emerging mental health conditions.

Crisis Stabilization

Raritan Bay Medical Center is fully prepared to handle psychiatric emergencies through its Crisis Stabilization Unit located at Perth Amboy. Housed within the emergency department, the area is uniquely designed to care for adults and children experiencing a behavioral health crisis. Experienced crisis counselors and trained psychiatric nurses are available 24 hours a day for onsite evaluation, and through consultation with on call psychiatrists, can make immediate treatment recommendations to resolve the crisis situation.

Crisis Hotline

If you or someone you love is suffering from a serious mental health problem, please call Raritan Bay Medical Center’s crisis hotline to speak with an experienced mental health counselor. This free, confidential service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 732.442.3794.

Education & Outreach

As part of our commitment to behavioral health, Raritan Bay Medical Center offers a diverse array of educational programs for area residents and the medical community.

Our mental health professionals provide free lectures, workshops and screenings for depression and other disorders in various public venues along with training for fellow practitioners. All outreach services aim to increase awareness about mental illness as well as access to effective, high quality treatment.

Do you suffer from anxiety, depression, memory loss or another mental health problem? Do you care for someone with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia? We can help.

We’re all aware of the impact that cancer, diabetes and other diseases can have on one’s health. Many don’t realize, however, that mental illnesses play an equally significant role in total wellness. And they’re just as common. An estimated 57.7 million Americans, or one in four adults, has some type of behavioral health disorder. They affect individuals of all ages and backgrounds, triggering physical as well as psychological symptoms, and represent the leading cause of disability in the United States for young adults.

Nevertheless, there is reason for great hope. With professional treatment, most people with mental illness can enjoy a better quality of life.  Our goal is to help patients manage their conditions to achieve optimal health, renewed independence and the freedom to live full, productive lives.

Over the past 30 years, Raritan Bay Medical Center has led the way for hundreds of community residents through its behavioral health services. This vital and growing component of the hospital’s continuum of care offers an integrated approach to healing, recovery and wellness for those facing mental health challenges. Our broad spectrum of services includes inpatient, outpatient and crisis intervention programs provided by a compassionate, multi-disciplinary team of psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, licensed clinical social workers and other specialized professionals.

Understanding Mental Illness

Mental illnesses are true medical conditions that affect an individual’s thinking, feeling, mood, relationships and daily functioning. Left untreated, these disorders can be debilitating and trigger such problems as substance abuse, unemployment, isolation and additional impairments.  Some common mental illnesses include dementia (including Alzheimer’s disease), schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder, panic disorder, anxiety disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and eating disorders.  While behavioral health problems are prevalent, up to 90 percent of those afflicted can recover with professional intervention.

-New medical pavilion launches hospital into retail medical environment-

WOODBRIDGE, N.J., December 1, 2009… Raritan Bay Medical Center, with locations in Perth Amboy and Old Bridge, recently began construction on a new outpatient medical pavilion located off of Route 1 and Green Street in Iselin. The 10,000sq.ft. facility, formerly the home of Domain Furniture, will provide Woodbridge area residents high quality urgent, non-emergency medical care as well as obstetrics and gynecology and physical therapy and rehabilitation services.  The urgent care component will be available seven days per week and signifies the hospital’s expansion into retail medicine.

“The model for effective health care delivery continues to change with greater emphasis on preventative medicine and better managing chronic health conditions. The convenience of a walk-in medical pavilion for urgent, non-emergent care eliminates the need to seek this same care in a more expensive emergency room setting, said Raritan Bay Medical Center President and CEO Michael R. D’Agnes.  “The fact that care will be provided by our hospital team provides even more comfort for patients and enables us to help those without a primary care physician find a medical home.

The urgent care component will be available seven days a week, 365 days a year for walk-in appointments. Urgent services include care for common illnesses; colds, sore throat, cuts (including providing stitches and their removal), eye, ear and sinus infections and chronic conditions; asthma, allergies, digestive disorders and more. Those needing emergent care, which includes chest pain, heart attack, and stroke for example, should continue to seek treatment at the hospital’s emergency room.   The facility will also provide diagnostic imaging services and preventative health screenings, such as blood pressure, cholesterol, allergy and diabetes testing and provide vaccinations. Staff will consists of a medical doctor and nurse practitioner, registered nurses and medical assistants.  Medicare and most insurance plans will be accepted. As an added benefit clinicians will be able to refer patients who need specialty care, advanced diagnostic testing or surgery to Raritan Bay Medical Center, providing continuity of care by a full service hospital known for high-quality outcomes.

“This is an exciting project for our community,” said Woodbridge Township Mayor John E. McCormac.  “Woodbridge is one of the few towns in the state experiencing commercial growth and business expansion.  The new Raritan Bay Medical Center Outpatient Pavilion under construction at the former Domain Furniture store site in Iselin stands as the first full-service non-emergency medical care facility in the Township geared to provide expert medical care to area residents and visitors.  The redevelopment and construction of the Pavilion facility also serves as the engine driving future redevelopment along the Route 1 corridor in Woodbridge.  I am extremely pleased to welcome Raritan Bay as the newest Township corporate citizen.

The Medical Pavilion at Woodbridge is tentatively scheduled to open January 2010.

PSE&G Awards RBMC $3.1 Million for Energy Efficiency Initiatives

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

PERTH AMBOY, December 22, 2009… Raritan Bay Medical Center, with locations in Old Bridge and Perth Amboy, has received a $3.1 million award from the Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) to implement energy efficiency improvements at its Perth Amboy location.

“PSE&G is delighted that our new Hospital Efficiency Program will allow Raritan Bay Medical Center to upgrade their facilities to add needed energy efficiencies,” said Al Matos, PSE&G’s vice president for renewables and energy solutions. “The program, an investment approved by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities this summer, was created to stimulate New Jersey’s ailing economy, reduce carbon emissions and create jobs.  It is aimed at hospitals in PSE&G’s service territory that lack capital for energy efficient infrastructure development and find it difficult to make the upfront costs for needed improvements. This project is a perfect example of how being green and doing the right thing can make good business sense.”

The hospital will install a variety of upgraded measures and technologies to energy consuming equipment and systems, including new cooling towers, boiler burners, windows and a new roof for one of the hospital’s wings, as well as chiller optimization, installing efficiency motors, lighting improvements and creating a centralized building management system.  The installations will be done by the Birdsall Services Group and will be completed during 2010.

“PSE&G’s award is greatly appreciated and in this time of increased environmental awareness enables us to reduce our energy use now and subsequently save on energy expenses, estimated at more than $1 million over the next three years,” said Raritan Bay Medical Center President and CEO Michael R. D’Agnes. “Those savings can then be applied to other areas of the hospital, benefiting those most important to us; our patients and their families.”

As part of the program, DBL Associates, Consulting Engineers, P.C. through PSE&G, provided the hospital with an investment grade facility audit of its energy consumption at no cost to identify areas needing efficiency upgrades.
