Raritan Bay Medical Center Recognized for Exceptional Heart Care
-Receives AHA’s Get With The GuidelinesSM – Heart Failure Gold Performance Achievement Award-

PERTH AMBOY, April 11, 2011… Raritan Bay Medical Center (RBMC), with locations in Old Bridge and Perth Amboy, has received the Get With The GuidelinesSM – Heart Failure Gold Performance Achievement Award from the American Heart Association (AHA). The recognition acknowledges that RBMC has met or exceeded the evidenced-based guidelines for the optimal care of heart failure patients, as outlined by the AHA / American College of Cardiology, for two consecutive years. During this time the medical center met the aggressive goal of treating heart failure patients with 85 percent compliance to these core standard levels of care.

“Raritan Bay Medical Center is dedicated to making our care for heart failure patients among the best in the country,” said Raritan Bay Medical Center, Senior Vice President, Medical Affairs Michael Ciencewicki, MD. “We will continue our efforts and build off the success of this award by continuing to implement the Get With The Guidelines – Heart Failure program that assisted us in accomplishing this goal.”

Get With The Guidelines is a quality improvement initiative that provides hospital staff with tools that follow proven evidence-based guidelines and procedures in caring for heart failure patients to prevent future hospitalizations. Heart failure patients are started on aggressive risk reduction therapies such as cholesterol-lowering drugs, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, aspirin, diuretics, and anticoagulants at RBMC. They also receive alcohol/drug use and thyroid management counseling as well as referrals for cardiac rehabilitation before being discharged.

“The full implementation of national heart failure guideline recommended care is a critical step in preventing recurrent hospitalizations and prolonging the lives of heart failure patients,” said Gregg C Fonarow, MD, national chairman of the Get With The Guidelines Steering Committee and director of Ahmanson-UCLA Cardiomyopathy Center. “The goal of the AHA’s Get With The Guidelines program is to help hospitals like Raritan Bay Medical Center implement appropriate evidence-based care and protocols that will reduce disability and the number of deaths in these patients.”

Raritan Bay Medical Center’s quick and efficient use of guideline tools improves the quality of care provided to heart failure patients, saves lives and ultimately reduces healthcare costs by lowering the recurrence of heart attacks. The medical center received the silver award last year, acknowledging adherence to the guidelines for 12 consecutive months.

New Outpatient and Imaging Suites Open in Perth Amboy

PERTH AMBOY, April 20, 2011… As part of Raritan Bay Medical Center’s (RBMC) ongoing growth and renewal program, the medical center celebrated the opening of new Outpatient and Imaging Suites in the refurbished Perth Amboy Blue Wing April 14. The wing’s entranceway and first level floor underwent a complete transformation and cosmetic upgrade, adding a new Center for Women, new location for the Center for Wound Healing that houses two hyperbaric oxygen chambers, cutting-edge MRI scanner, digital mammography and a convenient access point and parking for the medical center’s physical therapy and rehabilitation services.

RBMC’s Center for Women, also located in Old Bridge, focuses on meeting women’s specific healthcare needs and provides education, testing and treatment unique to women. In addition to bone densitometry and stereotactic breast biopsy services, used to discover osteoporosis and cancer respectively, the new Perth Amboy Center adds breast MRI imaging and MRI-guided biopsy, making the medical center one of few New Jersey hospitals to offer these advanced services in combination.

Raritan Bay’s Center for Wound Healing is a complete treatment facility, helping patients with persistent wounds find the ideal procedures to effectively heal. In-depth research into patients’ history, injuries and past treatments help the center’s multi-disciplinary team discover holistic and advanced options for complete healing, including the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

“It has been an exciting time at Raritan Bay Medical Center recently. We have been able to launch new services, expand our network of outpatient facilities and enhance amenities to match our already high-quality patient outcomes and exemplary clinical and Magnet nursing staff. The new suites and services in our renovated blue wing provide our outpatients with state-of-the-art technology and expert care in a convenient and comfortable location,” said Michael R. D’Agnes, president and CEO of Raritan Bay Medical Center. “Ultimately, our goal is to be the medical destination of choice for the community we serve.”

In recent years Raritan Bay has improved amenities, adding private patient rooms at its Old Bridge and Perth Amboy locations, kicked off new services and opened new outpatient facilities as part of its patient-focused and comprehensive renewal program. These activities include opening the Dr. Sam. Gordon Berkow Maternity Pavilion; the Medical Pavilion at Perth Amboy, providing physician office space on the hospital campus; the multi-purpose Medical Pavilion at Woodbridge offering non-emergency, urgent care, obstetrical/gynecological and physical therapy services; an outpatient physical therapy satellite office in Matawan at Victoria Healthcare and a $1 million 3,530 sq./ft. Perth Amboy emergency department expansion and renovation. RBMC also launched the Human Motion Institute at Raritan Bay Medical Center, a unique program offering a comprehensive continuum of musculoskeletal care within a highly integrated orthopedic healthcare delivery network, delivering high-quality care and helping each patient achieve maximum function and mobility as quickly and safely as possible.

New ‘Pink RibbonTM’ Center for Women Opens in Perth Amboy

New ‘Pink RibbonTM ’ Center for Women Opens in Perth Amboy

PERTH AMBOY, NJ, April 20, 2011… Raritan Bay Medical Center (RBMC) has opened a Center for Women in its Perth Amboy hospital, as part of the new Outpatient and Imaging Suites in its newly renovated Blue Wing.  The new center complements the medical center’s longstanding Old Bridge location. Both provide diagnosis and treatment for women’s specific needs, but the Perth Amboy location is one of only a few New Jersey sites providing breast MRI imaging and MRI-guided biopsy in combination. Additionally, women’s healthcare company Hologic has recognized RBMC as a Pink Ribbon FacilityTM certifying that the medical center provides its patients the best possible imaging technology available for the earliest possible detection of breast cancer.

Both modern facilities provide state-of-the-art testing that is unique to women – digital mammography, stereotactic vacuum-assisted core needle biopsy, ultrasound guided core biopsy and bone densitometry, used to diagnosis breast cancer and osteoporosis respectively. A biopsy is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure that allows an abnormal area of the breast to be examined by removing a minute tissue sample.

Radiologists who interpret the digital images at Raritan Bay use a “double read” method, unlike other “live read” facilities. Live read means that a single radiologist is quickly scanning the images often while multitasking. Double read method means that two doctors evaluate every screening mammogram and provide two opinions, not just one. The digital screening mammogram is then checked a third time by a CAD computer algorithm providing a third assurance. And interpretations are done in a secluded area and without interruption. If consultation and consensus is needed there is time for that as well.

The Center works hand-in-hand with primary care physicians and other RBMC medical departments, offering patients personalized, comprehensive care. Clinicians provide education for women on healthy living, and in conjunction with RBMC’s physical therapy department and Division of Integrative Medicine, provide a variety of women’s health services including treatment for urinary incontinence, physical therapy for individuals diagnosed with lymphedema and holistic therapies used to cope with stress associated with illness and everyday issues.

In recent years the American Cancer Society has outlined several benefits associated with the use of MRI in diagnosing breast cancer, including;

  • MRI-guided biopsy is more comfortable for patients with its rapid procedure and local anesthetic delivery time, is more accurate and allows for increased tissue acquisition.
  • Breast MRI is recommended for women with a high risk of breast cancer, with its detailed, cross-sectional images of the inside of the breast.
  • When used in combination with digital mammography imaging, unnecessary biopsies may be avoided
  • For women newly diagnosed with cancer in one breast, MRI is much better than mammography in determining whether the other breast carries a cancer, enabling diagnosis and treatment of opposite-breast cancers at the same time of the initial diagnosis

To schedule an appointment, call 732-324-5270. For more information, call 732-360-4232 or visit www.rbmc.org. RBMC also provides breast cancer support group meetings at its Medical Pavilion at Woodbridge, for schedule and registration call 732-362-3860.

What to Expect

Depending on your procedure, you may be discharged the same day or spend one or two nights in one of the Institute’s private patient rooms.  Upon returning home you will benefit from monthly support groups and continued guidance from our dedicated staff. With motivation and commitment, most patients lose 100 pounds or more within two years of surgery.

Surgical Options

RBMC is a leading NJ bariatric surgery center. Most bariatric procedures are now performed with tiny incisions, resulting in less pain after surgery and faster recoveries. Patients are generally back on their feet in a few days and may resume all activities within three weeks.

The most commonly performed procedures include:

  • Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass – The surgeon creates a small stomach pouch, bypasses a section of small intestines and then attaches the lower part of the small intestines directly to the pouch.  This technique restricts food intake while the body absorbs fewer calories.
  • Adjustable Gastric Banding – A band is placed around the upper stomach to create a smaller pouch, restricting the amount of food the stomach can hold without interfering with the digestive process.  The band can be adjusted or removed over time.
  • Gastric Sleeve – The surgeon removes about 85 percent of the stomach and shapes the remaining portion into a tube.  Food consumption is restricted while absorption is unaffected.

Am I Candidate for Surgery?

Candiates for weight loss surgery should meet the following guidelines:

  • You are an adult with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more, or a BMI above 35 with a serious obesity-related medical problem such as diabetes, heart disease or sleep apnea.
  • You have been unable to lose weight through non-surgical alternatives, including diet, exercise and medication.
