About the Cancer Center
Program Accreditation
In October 1999, the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons granted approval to Raritan Bay Medical Center's Jacqueline M. & Robert N. Wilentz Cancer Center.
Established in 1932, the approvals program sets standards for cancer programs. Receiving care at a Commission on Cancer approved cancer program ensures that a patient will have access to:
- Comprehensive care offering a range of state-of-the-art services and equipment.
A multispecialty, team approach to coordinate the best treatment options available to cancer patients.
Information about cancer clinical trials, education and support.
Lifelong patient follow-up through a cancer registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results.
Ongoing monitoring against the highest standards in the nation.
Approval by the Commission on Cancer is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to provide the best in diagnosis and treatment of cancer and to undergo a rigorous evaluation process and a review of its performance. In order to maintain approval, facilities with approved cancer programs must undergo an on-site review every three years.
Slightly more than one-fifth of the country's hospitals have approved cancer programs, and more than 80 percent of patients who are newly diagnosed with cancer are treated in those facilities.

Raritan Bay Medical Center is proud to associate our program with the Wilentz family, a name that means so very much to the residents of greater Middlesex County.
Jacqueline Malino Wilentz, was an accomplished artist who worked in watercolors, oils and acrylics on canvas and acrylics and monotypes on paper. Born in New York City in 1928 and she was educated at the Fieldston School and Vassar College. Her post-graduate work included studies in art history at Columbia University, and in drawing and painting at the Museum of Modern Art. Her studio artwork was done at the 92nd Street "Y," the Bercone Studios and with several New York artists including Lionel Gilbert and the WPA artist Zoltan Hecht. Ms. Wilentz was a long-time resident of Perth Amboy, living on Lewis Street where one of her favorite sights was the Booz' pier jutting into Raritan Bay. She espoused the cause of public education for Perth Amboy's children. A devoted mother of three, she was a constant companion to her husband, the late Chief Justice Robert N. Wilentz. She fought breast cancer courageously from the mid-70's until her death on March 29, 1989.
Robert N. Wilentz was born in 1927. A valedictorian at Perth Amboy High School and an undergraduate of Harvard, Mr. Wilentz served in the Navy during World War II as a Seaman First Class. After the war and upon graduation from Columbia University Law School, he joined his father and brother in the family-run Perth Amboy law firm. Mr. Wilentz served two terms as a New Jersey State Assemblyman. In 1979, then-governor Brendan T. Byrne appointed Mr. Wilentz Chief Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court. Under Chief Justice Wilentz's leadership, the court earned a national reputation for its willingness to take on tough and often controversial legal issues, setting national standards for judicial activism. A Perth Amboy native, devoted husband, father and an accomplished pianist, Chief Justice Wilentz held the state's top judicial position for seventeen years. In 1996, he resigned his post because of his battle with cancer. He died six weeks later, on July 24, 1996.
