Cardiology Diagnostic & Treatment Center - Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory
Raritan Bay Medical Center has opened a Cardiac Catheterizatin Laboratory, enabling patients to have this visual heart test performed at their community medical center rather than traveling to distant facilities to have this procedure performed. Cardiac catheterization enables the cardiologist to observe the heart's blood flow and study the condition of blood vessels and the presence or absence of obstructions. The cath lab is just one part of the medical center's Cardiology Diagnostic and Treatment Center services.

The new Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory is the latest addition to the Cardiology Diagnostic and Treatment Center at Raritan Bay. A cardiac catheterization is a visual heart test conducted by a cardiologist. It enables the physician to observe the heart's blood flow and study the condition of blood vessels and the presence or absence of obstructions. This assists the physician in making appropriate treatment recommendations.

Once scheduled by your physician, Cardiac catheterizations are performed on a same-day basis. The procedure takes place in a special surgical environment designed specifically for cardiac catheterizations. Patient recovery takes place within the same area under the care of cardiac specialists. Family and friends monitor your recovery from a nearby lounge.

The new Cardiac Catheterization Lab is located on the critical care floor of Raritan Bay's Perth Amboy Division, adjacent to the Intensive Care Unit, Coronary Care Unit and new Cardiology wing. Most inpatient and outpatient cardiac testing will be available at this location so that patients will be more comfortable and all the information will be accessible to the physician.

The Cardiac Catheterization Lab consists of a procedure room with adjacent control room, a three-bed recovery room, observation room, nurses station, a chemical room for film developing and a cineroom for doctors to review films and dictate their reports. State-of-the-art digital computer equipment is used to develop composite pictures of the heart, which can then be transmitted to doctors who are off-site.

When do You Need a Cardiac Cath Test?
Cardiologists perform cardiac catheterizations when they need pictures of the blood vessels that supply blood directly to heart muscle. The test is sometimes used to confirm or disprove that a patient's symptoms are due to coronary artery disease. The test is most often used to assess the extent of coronary disease in order to assist the physician in making appropriate recommendations and treatment.

Also, a cardiologist may perform a catheterization if the patient has a disease of the heart valves, or has had rheumatic heart disease or abnormal heart murmurs. An echocardiogram can help decide when and if surgical repair or replacement of the valve is necessary. If the echocardiogram shows severe disease, a catheterization can be done to provide the final measurements before surgery.
