Thomas G. Shanahan, FHFMA, CPA, of Freehold Township, N.J., has served as an executive leader of Hackensack Meridian Health Raritan Bay Medical Center for 17 years, first as senior vice president/chief financial officer, then executive vice president/chief operating officer, and now as chief operating officer/hospital site executive.
He is a Certified Public Accountant, Fellow of the Healthcare Financial Management Association, a member of the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Mr. Shanahan is a board member of Raritan Insurance LTD. He is a past president of the Healthcare Financial Management Association, New Jersey Chapter and a past trustee of the Visiting Nurse Association of Central Jersey.
Mr. Shanahan possesses 35 years of experience in the health care industry. Prior to joining Raritan Bay, he served the Saint Barnabas System as chief financial officer of Clara Maass Medical Center, Belleville, N.J., from 1998 to 2001, and West Hudson Hospital in Kearny, N.J., from 1993 to 1998. Earlier he served as director of financial operations at Saint Elizabeth Hospital in Elizabeth, N.J., and director of budget & reimbursement at Rahway Hospital in Rahway, N.J. Mr. Shanahan earned his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, N.J.
During Mr. Shanahan’s tenure, Raritan Bay has received a variety of organizational accolades and patient care quality designations, including Magnet recognition for nursing excellence three consecutive times, launched new patient-focused services, opened the Medical and Surgical Pavilion at Raritan Bay Old Bridge and guided the medical center to a merger with Meridian Health (now Hackensack Meridian Health) in 2016.
