Hurricane Sandy Recovery RBMC Update

PERTH AMBOY, NJ, October 31, 2012… Raritan Bay Medical Center’s Old Bridge and Perth Amboy locations received minimal damage and flooding from Hurricane Sandy, but lost power. The Perth Amboy hospital has since regained power but the Old Bridge hospital is still utilizing backup power as of 5:30 p.m., October 31. A significant amount of fuel is available for a third generator arriving later. The Old Bridge Medical Arts building, housing physicians’ offices, is without power and is currently closed.

“Thankfully, Raritan Bay Medical Center was spared from the worst effects of the storm and we have been able to remain operational,” says President and CEO Michael R. D’Agnes. “I’m grateful to all staff who have ensured that patient care and safety is paramount, despite being away from their homes during this major weather event. These dedicated individuals are continuing to handle emergency medical situations ensuring hospital operations are maintained.”

Currently, the emergency departments at Old Bridge and Perth Amboy are experiencing a high volume of patients. Residents are encouraged to visit Raritan Bay Medical Center’s Medical Pavilion at Woodbridge urgent care center, 740 Route 1 North, Iselin, NJ, for non-life threatening, minor conditions and ailments, open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays. A visit to an emergency department is needed for the following;

  • Chest pain
  • Trouble breathing
  • Sudden dizziness or weakness
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Unstoppable bleeding
  • Change in vision
  • Severe or persistent vomiting, or vomiting blood

Care can be provided at an urgent care center for common illnesses; colds, sore throats and cuts (providing stitches and their removal), eye, ear and sinus infections and chronic conditions; asthma, allergies and digestive disorders.

  • Surplus food, water, linen and other supplies are stored for patients and staff.
  • Medications and clinical supplies have been stockpiled.
  • Vendors are on call for additional supplies if necessary.
