Center for Bariatric Surgery
Pathway to Surgery
The decision to have bariatric surgery is a life-changing experience. In addition to the physical changes you will undergo, there will be challenges in your daily activities in relation to eating, drinking, exercise habits, psycho-social health and well-being.
At the Center for Bariatric Surgery, we offer our support and encouragement throughout all the stages of the weight loss process.
You will begin by seeing your Primary Care Physician. He/she will review your medical history and discuss recommendations with you. Most insurance carriers require that you attend a supervised weight loss program for a specific amount of time prior to authorizing bariatric surgery. Your Primary Care Physician may be required to document this in order to get authorization for surgery.
You will then meet with the Bariatric surgeon who will review your medical history, lifestyle and support system. Having a support system in place is essential to your success and well-being. Your Bariatric surgeon will discuss the different weight loss options, your expectations, concerns and will recommend the best option for you.
Arrangements will then be made for you to meet with a Registered Dietician for nutritional counseling. She will review your history, dietary patterns, height, weight and explain the dietary modifications that come with the surgery.
During this time you will be having pre-operative testing (blood work, x-rays, pulmonary tests). These tests determine your suitability for surgery. You will also be referred to specialists for operative clearance (cardiologist, pulmonologist, psychiatrist).
This process can take several months to complete so please do not be discouraged. Our goal is to get you through your surgery as safely and healthy as possible.
Throughout this time you should not gain weight. It’s preferable that you change your dietary habits and begin to lose weight before the surgery. This will not only facilitate your surgery but will also get you accustomed to dietary restrictions and an exercise routine. Once you have been cleared for surgery and your insurance has approved, your surgeon will schedule your surgery.
Bariatric surgery requires a life-long commitment to specific dietary guidelines, exercise and follow up. Your commitment is paramount in your success. We stress that the surgical procedure is a tool to help you achieve the best results.
TheCenter for Bariatric Surgery team wishes you the very best and we look forward to working with you.
